Easter Seals Southeast WisconsinEaster Seals Southeast Wisconsin

On Friday June 4th, Easter Seals Southeast Wisconsin's Adult Day Servies program will be having a Barbeque at four different locations. Take a look at the event flyer for more information: http://tinyurl.com/2wn6k8t

All proceeds from our BBQ will benefit Easter Seals Southeast Wisconsin's Adult Day Services program and gives people with disabilities the chance to grow and laugh together, just like Janie.

Janie is a person who can teach you so much without her ever saying a word, and remember you even if you have only met her on a few occasions, and quite possibly will remember your name as well

Janie attended Easter Seals programming years ago, and returned to Easter Seals because she felt this was the best program and best matched her needs, and also the only program that could draw upon who Janie was.

Janie is a very quiet and smart woman. If you take the time to get to know her, you will see that Janie possesses a gentleness about her that can often make you feel more calm just being in her presence. Janie is someone who could easily be overlooked in a crowd as she prefers to keep to herself most times.  However, if you stop to introduce yourself and talk with her a little, you will see there is much more to Janie than what meets the eye.

When Janie first returned to the program, she was a little apprehensive to interact with others as it took her time to become comfortable in her new programming. Often she chose to do activities independently throughout the day, and staff soon realized that Janie would need to be slowly introduced into group activities. Janie knew it was that time, and soon enough, began to ease into activities throughout the day.

Over time, Janie has begun to include herself more and more each day. While she still prefers some quite time alone, she has opened up and embraced many opportunities and challenges placed in front of her. As of recent, Janie has been participating in more community walks, and she has been offering to help staff and participants each day. Janie now joins the group in karaoke, dancing, and exercise activities that, at one time, she indicated she was not interested in trying, but now enjoys.

Today, Janie can be heard laughing or seen smiling, even when you may think she is not paying attention to what may be happening around her. Janie is someone who you may think you know, but she continually introduces you to things about herself that may not always be obvious. One of Janie’s favorite activities is solving math equations, and often times you will see her working with her math book. She has a love for numbers and often times she combines her love of numbers with her love for art. Janie will make the simplest numbers into artful, creative drawings…two seemingly different tasks that she loves to combine.

It is the unique gifts that each of us have that allows us to celebrate our diversity, and it is our interests and our choices that make each of us who we are. At Easter Seals, we celebrate Janie and all that she is, but also, all that she wants to be. Janie, the quiet woman, who will tell you a story she has created with art through numbers. Janie, who will surely show you, that there is so much more to a person than what meets the eye.
